How to choose a seedling grow shelf
Tray fit and tier count
Standard seed flats measure about 10 by 20 inches. A rack about 24 to 30 inches wide and 13 to 14 inches deep holds one flat per tier; wider racks hold more. Count how many flats you start at peak season and add one tier for potting up. Remember that a light is needed for every growing tier; some racks include fewer lights than tiers.
Light output: wattage and PPFD
Wattage tells you how much power the light draws, not how much useful light reaches the plants. PPFD, measured in micromoles per square meter per second, is a better figure, but only when it is given at a stated distance. Only two listings on the shelf give it: Barrina at 3.9 inches and Bstrip at 8 inches.
