Five listings on the shelf are filter media rather than complete filters: three Aquatic Experts pads, a Koral roll and a six-pack of CNZ Japanese mat sheets. Media is what you buy when a skimmer box mat wears out, when you build your own filter, or when a bargain filter’s foam has collapsed. This coarse pad is 1.25 inches thick, thicker than the 1-inch Aquatic Experts rolls, which the listing says lets water flow through without premature clogging.

The usual layering is coarse first, then fine. Aquatic Experts sells a fine white pad for the second layer, and the CNZ mat sheets are aimed at the biological stage. How to choose a pond filter

The right filter depends on how the pond is built, how many fish it holds and how much algae it grows. Pressurized, all-in-one or box filter

• Pressurized filters are sealed canisters that sit outside the pond. They can be partly buried and can push water uphill to a waterfall. Most include a UV lamp and a backflush cleaning mode. They need a separate pump.
• All-in-one filter boxes sit on the pond floor with a pump inside. They are the simplest to set up and suit small ponds, but they are harder to hide and usually lack UV.
• Gravity or box filters sit at the high point of the pond and return water by gravity, often as a waterfall. They hold more media for heavy fish loads but are larger and need careful installation. None of the current listings we compared is a gravity box, so cut-to-fit media is the route for a DIY version.

The three stages of filtration

Mechanical filtration uses sponges and pads to trap leaves, silt and uneaten food. Higher ppi numbers mean finer foam. Sizing to pond volume and fish load

Work out pond volume first: length times width times average depth in feet, times 7.5, gives gallons. Then read the filter’s rating carefully. When a listing quotes two numbers, as the VIVOHOME and Three Seconds filters do, the fish pond figure is roughly half the ornamental figure. For koi or a heavily stocked goldfish pond, choose a filter rated for at least double your actual volume. Oversizing a filter costs little; undersizing it shows up as cloudy water and frequent cleaning.

Matching the filter to your pump

Oregon State University Extension advises that pump capacity and filter choice depend on pond size, and that water-cooled pumps are preferable to oil-cooled ones, which can leak oil into the pond. A common rule is to move the full pond volume through the filter about once every one to two hours. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension explains that algae blooms, scums and mats result from nutrients entering the water, from fertilized lawns, animal waste and other runoff, and that nutrients recycle in a pond for years. A filter helps, but so does feeding fish lightly, removing leaves before they sink, keeping lawn fertilizer away from the pond edge and adding plenty of plants.
