Only two of the 13 liners we compared are EPDM rubber, and they are also the only two at 45 mil and the only two that state a warranty: 20 years for this Firestone sheet and 25 years for the LifeGuard. Every plastic sheet that states a thickness is 28 mil or thinner. Thickness matters for lifespan. Oregon State University Extension, writing about flexible liners, gives rough service lives of up to 50 years for a 45-mil liner, about 20 years for 32-mil and 7 to 10 years for 20-mil.

The 15 by 20 foot size suits a pond of roughly 9 by 14 feet at 2 feet deep once you allow for depth on both sides and an edge overlap, which covers most backyard ecosystem ponds with a small waterfall. EPDM drapes into plant shelves and around boulders more easily than stiff plastic, and fewer folds mean fewer places for debris to collect.

The only liner with a named fish-safety certification

Most listings on the shelf say their liner is safe for fish and plants. The LifeGuard listing is the only one that names who certified it, Guardian Systems Inc., and it carries the longest warranty of any liner here at 25 years. Oregon State University Extension advises that a liner not made specifically for ponds should say fish friendly on the packaging, because other plastics can release chemicals toxic to plants and animals. A named certification is a clearer signal than a marketing claim.

The listing also explains the material difference that matters over time: unlike vinyl, this EPDM contains no plasticizers, so it should not turn brittle, crack or split as it ages. At 10 by 15 feet it suits a pond of roughly 5 by 10 feet at 1.5 feet deep, a common size for a starter water garden or small fish pond. At about 20 pounds it is light enough for one person to place.

At 40 by 40 feet, this sheet covers 1,600 square feet, four times the 20 by 20 foot Adroiteet, the next largest on the shelf. The seller says it was first made for aquaculture and waterproofing work, and the five-layer structure, a reinforced HDPE net core with a leak-resistant coating on each side, reflects that. It suits duck ponds, large koi ponds and farm-style water features where an EPDM sheet of the same size would be very heavy.

The listing gives weight per square foot rather than thickness, so it cannot be compared directly with the 20-mil and 45-mil sheets. The seller’s own claim is that it has held up outdoors for over five years, a modest figure next to the 20 and 25-year warranties on the rubber liners. It advises leveling the ground, laying underlayment such as sand or old carpet, and never dragging the sheet over sharp objects.

Nine of the sheets on the shelf are 20-mil polyethylene, and most say only that they suit small, medium or large ponds. UWIOFF is the only brand that puts a gallon figure on its sizes: up to 500 gallons for this 10 by 13 foot sheet and up to 200 gallons for its 7 by 10 foot sheet. That is a helpful sanity check for a first-time pond builder working from a preformed plan or a fixed water volume.

HDPE is stiffer than EPDM and RPE, so expect more folds around curves and shelves. The listing claims UV and puncture resistance and says the material is more leak-proof than LDPE. It weighs about 11 pounds, a fraction of a rubber liner of similar area.

The biggest 20 mil sheet for a wide, shallow pond

A square sheet is the efficient shape for a round or kidney-shaped pond, and at 20 by 20 feet this is the largest of the HDPE liners on the shelf. Using the Oregon State University Extension method of adding three times the depth to length and width, it covers a pond of about 14 by 14 feet at 2 feet deep. Adroiteet sells the same material in 10 by 15 and 14 by 14 foot sizes, which also appear on the shelf.

The listing claims puncture and tear resistance and says the sheet is soft enough to suit different shapes, though HDPE is generally stiffer than rubber. Several of the feature bullets are garbled, and the listing gives no weight, warranty or capacity, so judge it on size and thickness alone.

For a large pond that will hold koi for many years, the thinner sheet is a compromise. It makes most sense for a pond you may rebuild, a wildlife pond without heavy stocking, or a site where the budget must go to pumps and filtration first.

Buying a 15 by 20 foot sheet for a 3-foot fountain basin wastes money and leaves you with offcuts. At 4 by 7 feet, this is the smallest liner on the shelf and suits a pondless fountain reservoir, a small bog garden beside a larger pond, or a pond of about 2 by 5 feet and 8 inches deep. It weighs only about 2.3 pounds.

The listing claims UV, puncture and tear resistance and says the sheet can be used for more than 10 years, which is a seller claim rather than a warranty. UWIOFF also suggests it for raised beds and self-watering planters, where a small offcut of liner is handy.

How to choose a pond liner

EPDM, HDPE, LDPE or RPE

• EPDM rubber is flexible in heat and cold, drapes neatly into shelves and is the material with the longest stated warranties on the shelf. It is heavy and costs the most.
• HDPE is a stiff, light plastic sheet. Listings call it more leak-proof than LDPE. It folds less neatly around curves.
• LDPE is softer and easier to fold than HDPE but generally less tough. One 20-mil LDPE sheet appears on the shelf.
• RPE has a woven core between coated layers, giving tear strength at low weight. It suits large ponds where an EPDM sheet would be too heavy to move.

Whatever the material, Oregon State University Extension advises choosing a liner made for ponds or clearly labeled fish friendly, since other plastics may release chemicals toxic to plants and animals. A black or dark brown liner disappears under water; lighter colors make a pond look like a swimming pool.

Thickness and lifespan

Thickness is measured in mils, thousandths of an inch. Oregon State University Extension gives rough lifespans of up to 50 years for a 45-mil liner, about 20 years for 32-mil and 7 to 10 years for 20-mil. If you plan to keep fish in the same pond for decades, the thicker rubber is cheaper over its life than replacing a thin sheet two or three times.

How to size a liner

Oregon State University Extension’s method is simple: multiply the pond’s maximum depth by three, then add that figure to both the length and the width. A pond 15 feet long, 10 feet wide and 2 feet deep needs a liner about 21 by 16 feet, which leaves enough for an apron around the edge. Underlayment and puncture protection

Rocks, roots and settling soil cause most liner failures. UV and exposed edges

Liner above the waterline takes direct sun, and that is where thin plastic breaks down first. Tuck the edge under rocks, gravel or turf, and keep the water topped up so the band of exposed liner stays narrow.
