The only listing with independently verified pressure and flow

Pressure washer numbers are notoriously optimistic, so it matters that this is the only one of the 17 listings stating that its PSI and GPM claims were checked by an independent lab. Its 2.0 GPM is also the highest flow among corded electrics that state both pressure and flow; the Westinghouse electrics list 1.76 max GPM, which they note is measured at the lowest pressure. Flow is what rinses loosened grime away, so it is the spec that most affects how long siding or a driveway takes.

One detail is worth reading closely. The listing also states 3,300 cleaning units. Multiplying 3,000 PSI by 2.0 GPM would give 6,000, so the 3,300 figure suggests the peak pressure and peak flow are not delivered together. That is normal across the category, but the Greenworks is one of the few listings that gives a number you can compare directly. It is also the only listing that states a maximum inlet water temperature (104 F), a reminder not to feed it hot water.

At about 50.7 pounds it is the heaviest electric on the shelf, and the listing does not state cord length, GFCI protection, a soap tank or a warranty. Plug it into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet.

The most pressure and flow among the 17 listings

Two gas washers appear on the shelf. The IvyBess states 4,200 PSI at 4.0 GPM, both the highest figures of any listing, against 3,400 PSI and 2.6 GPM on the Westinghouse WPX3400. On paper that is enough for large driveways, two-story siding with an extension wand, and stripping loose paint. It is also the only listing that states EPA and CARB emissions certification plus ETL safety listing, which matters in states with stricter small-engine rules.

It is the heaviest listing at about 66 pounds and comes from a less established brand. Its warranty is mentioned only in a bullet heading, without terms. The listing’s comparisons with ordinary models are marketing claims, so weigh the stated specs rather than the adjectives.

Gas engines produce carbon monoxide. OSHA’s carbon monoxide fact sheet describes CO as colorless and odorless, warns that large amounts can overcome a person in minutes, and specifically advises avoiding gas-powered engines such as those in pressure washers in enclosed spaces. Run it outdoors, away from open garage doors, windows and vents.

It also states M22 accessory compatibility and includes oil and tools, so it is ready to run after fueling.

At 2.6 GPM it still moves much more water than any corded electric on the shelf, which makes driveways, fences and large patios go faster. The 12 inch never-flat wheels avoid the flat-tire nuisance that pneumatic wheels can bring after winter storage.

The trade-offs are the same as any gas washer: about 63 pounds, fuel and oil upkeep, noise, and exhaust. The MSU Extension safety newsletter on pressure washers advises against using gas-powered units indoors or in enclosed, unventilated spaces to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

The four-wheel base has a low center of gravity to prevent tipping, and the 20 ounce soap tank means no separate bottle. Like the WPX3000e, it has an auto-stop pump and 3-year coverage.

Its sibling, the ePX3100s, is lighter still and states a 35 foot GFCI cord, but its listing gives two different weights (10 pounds in a bullet, 13.5 in the specs) and a shorter 2-year warranty. The ePX3100v keeps the 3-year coverage of the larger Westinghouse models.

Seven of the 17 listings are battery handhelds, with stated pressures between 1,250 and 1,480 PSI. The KEEPEAK sits near the top of that range at 1,450 PSI, uses a brushless motor (one of two cordless listings that say so, with the LEOTER), and includes two batteries, which most single-battery kits do not. Drawing from a bucket makes it handy for rinsing muddy tools, wheelbarrows, mower decks and patio chairs at the far end of a yard.

Several cordless listings claim 3 GPM or more at around 1,450 PSI, figures above what the corded electrics state. Treat those flow claims with caution; none of the cordless listings says they were independently verified, and they are not comparable with corded or gas ratings.

Cordless units are for light cleaning, not driveways or siding. The listing does not state a warranty, and runtime is up to 30 minutes per charge.

How to choose a pressure washer

PSI, GPM and cleaning units

PSI is the force of the water; GPM is how much water moves. Pressure breaks grime loose, and flow carries it away. Cleaning units (PSI multiplied by GPM) are a quick way to compare machines, but only if the numbers are measured together. Many listings give a maximum PSI and a maximum GPM measured at different settings, so look for a rated or working figure where one is given. As a rough guide, 1,300 to 1,900 PSI suits cars, furniture and grills; 2,000 to 2,800 PSI handles decks, fences, siding and patios; and 3,000 PSI and up suits large concrete areas and heavy staining.

Electric, gas or cordless

Corded electric washers are quieter, lighter, start instantly and need almost no maintenance, which makes them the right choice for most homeowners with an outdoor outlet. Gas washers deliver more flow and roam anywhere, but they are loud, heavy and need fuel, oil and seasonal care. Battery handhelds trade power for convenience and are best for quick rinses away from a faucet. If your yard already runs on gas tools like a walk-behind mower or string trimmer, gas upkeep may already be routine; if not, electric is simpler.

Nozzles and technique

The 0 degree tip is a pinpoint jet that can gouge wood and etch concrete; reserve it for small spots. Use 15 degrees for stubborn stains on concrete or brick, 25 degrees for general cleaning, and 40 degrees for siding, windows, cars and soft wood. MSU Extension advises starting with the widest-angle tip about 2 feet from a test surface and adjusting nozzle and distance as needed. A turbo nozzle spins a narrow jet for faster concrete work, and a surface cleaner gives even results on large flat areas.

Safety: injection injuries, GFCI and carbon monoxide

Injection injuries. MSU Extension’s pressure washer safety newsletter warns that high-pressure injection injuries may at first appear minor, which leads people to delay treatment and raises the risk of infection, disability or amputation. It notes the hand is the most common injection site. Never point the wand at yourself, people or pets, never wipe or block the nozzle with a hand, engage the trigger lock when you set the gun down, and seek emergency care for any skin break from the stream, even if it looks small. Wear safety glasses, gloves and closed shoes, and avoid ladders, since kickback can push you off balance; use an extension wand instead.

GFCI and electrical safety. The same newsletter advises testing the ground fault circuit interrupter before use, keeping cord connections out of standing water, using an extension cord rated for wet locations if one is needed, and having the machine inspected if it trips a breaker. Only two listings here state a GFCI cord, so plug other electrics into a GFCI-protected outlet.

Carbon monoxide. OSHA’s fact sheet notes CO is colorless and odorless and that large amounts can overcome a person in minutes. It advises avoiding gas-powered engines, including those on pressure washers, in enclosed spaces. Run gas units outdoors only, never in a garage or shed, even with the door open, and keep the exhaust away from windows and vents.

Runoff and detergents

Sweep or blow debris first, test plain water before reaching for chemicals, and keep wash water out of storm drains. UNC Environment, Health and Safety notes that biodegradable or green detergents can still harm aquatic life and should not go down storm drains, and recommends trying plain high-pressure water first. Use pressure-washer-safe soap through the low-pressure soap tip or a foam cannon, and protect nearby plants with a rinse of clean water before and after.

Storage and care

Drain water from the pump and hose before freezing weather, store electrics indoors, and stabilize fuel or run gas units dry before long storage. Check O-rings on quick-connect fittings each season; a leaking fitting costs pressure.

Two-story siding, roofs, older painted surfaces that may contain lead, and delicate stone are jobs where a mistake is costly or dangerous.
