Read coverage claims carefully

Listings state coverage in square feet (oscillators) or diameter (impact and rotating). A 50-foot diameter circle is about 1,960 square feet; an 85-foot circle is about 5,670. Claims assume good water pressure; household pressure, a long or narrow hose, or a second sprinkler on the same line all shorten the throw. Measure your lawn and expect real coverage a little below the box figure.

How much and when to water

The EPA’s WaterSense program says most landscapes need about one inch of water a week, including rain, and Illinois Extension puts cool-season lawns at 1 to 1.5 inches to stay green and growing.
